Project Outline

A five-step Art and Design project for primary schools (30 children each) based on Wagner’s Ring Cycle. Wagner’s mythic world, similar in so many ways to Tolkein’s world of The Lord of the Rings, is a musical treasure box filled with fantastic giants, dragons, women warriors, magic swords and of course, a ‘precious’ ring. Design possibilities for children include an underwater scene, a dragon’s lair, a castle, a rainbow, a mystic tree, a flood etc

Having been to visit the design studios at Central St. Martins and seen a 1hr version of The Ring at the theatre, children will undertake a design project, over half a term, to re-design one of the scenes they saw at the theatre (The Rhein, The Dragon’s Lair, The Flaming Rock and The Forest) for a re-staging with professional singers at the newly created magical Dream Space; a hall at Pooles Park Primary School.

Half-day, in-school workshops with EPOC workshop leaders and students from Central St. Martins College of Art to design one whole scene for a restaging of the Ring at Pooles Park School. There are 4 scenes to be designed by school students:

  • The Rhein - an underwater scene with Rheinmaidens and the evil Alberich;
  • The Dragon’s Lair – a cave where Siegfried kills the dragon (Fafner) and takes the ring;
  • The Flaming Rock – where Brunnhilde waits to be rescued by Siegfried; and
  • The Forest – a wooded scene where Hagen kills Siegrfried.

A transformation of a school hall …

… to this (Dream Exhibition 2010).

Step 5: The Ring – re-staged
