Ring Project 2011 The new Central St. Martins (opened Sept 2011) Workshops in Schools

A five-step Music, Art and Design project for classes of primary or secondary schools (30 children each) based on Humperdinck’s classic children’s opera Hansel and Gretel. The fairytale world, based on the Grimm brothers enduring tale is a full of mysterious forest characters, witches, gingerbread and hidden secrets.

Having been to visit the design studios at Central St. Martins and seen a 75-min version of The Hansel and Gretel at the theatre, children will undertake a design project, over the Spring term of 2013, to re-design one of the scenes they saw at the theatre for a re-staging in schools.

Step 1: INSET for teachers

Step 2: Trip to the Theatre – Part 1: Intro Workshop

10.30am – 12.30

Children spend the morning visiting the design studios at Central St. Martins Design studios (at the new King’s Cross site) for a practical intro to set, prop and costume design, set modelling, costume drawing, prop making led by CSM graduate and undergraduate mentors. The children stay on site to eat their packed lunches before going to the Theatre for Step 3 of the project.

Step 3: Trip to the Theatre – Part 2: Watch Performance

On the same day as Step 2, children attend a 75-min musical, ‘promenade’ performance of Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel at the new Platform Theatre at Central St. Martin’s (Kings Cross) alongside 4 EPOC singers and 8 designers. The promenade performances will feature c.8 different scenes in c.8 different locations around the theatre including the Platform Theatre, the studio theatre and the main concourse.

Step 4: Workshops 1 & 2 in Schools

Jan-Feb 2013. 2 x 2hr workshops in individual schools

Half-day, in-school workshops with EPOC workshop leaders and students from Central St. Martins College of Art to design and perform one whole scene for a restaging of Hansel and Gretel at your school.

Step 5: Workshop 3: Hansel and Gretel – re-staged

March 2013. 1 x 2hr workshop in individual schools @ your school

Re-staging of Hansel and Gretel at your school. This will be a presentation featuring the scene that the children have designed.

Cost:

Option 1: £500 (+VAT)  per class includes up to 35 tickets to see the show as part of Phase 2 and basic art materials.
Option 2: £900 (+VAT) for two classes includes up to 70 tickets to see the show as part of Phase 2 and basic art materials.


To Book: Choose which Class/es you would like to book for from the table below. The project is designed to be suitable for ‘pairs’ of classes from the same school although single classes can be accommodated.
