Magic Flute Games

There are many games based on the Magic Flute. Some of the best ones you have to buy. Here are a couple of our favourites: one a free one and the other a sampler of the one that you might like to buy.

There are some good games here created to accompany the 2006 film by Kenneth Branagh, made to for the 250th anniversary celebration of Mozart's birthday. The story, which has been updated to a World War I setting, and by going to the website below you can: see clips of the film; listen to the whole piece (in Stephen Fry’s English translation); and play an amazing range of games based on the music and the film. Two singers feature in the film who have worked for EPOC: Charne Rochford (who played the Prince in Love for Three Oranges and Don José in Carmen); and Keel Watson (who played the Father in Hansel and Gretel and Kurwenal in Tristan and Isolde).See if you can spot them.

As the player of the game you are cast in the role of little ‘Wolfie’ - Mozart on a quest to break the terrible spell by the Queen of the Night to steal the Sun, to rescue Prince Tamino and Princess Pamina with the help of Papageno. As you enter and successfully accomplish each of the games, you win a number of trophies that you carry with you on your journey. There are Music Games, Music Jigsaw Puzzles, Riddles, Music Trivia, a Magic Flute synopsis and Mozart’s Biography. The game focuses on enhancing the following functional skills: Audio and Visual Memory, Critical Thinking, Problem Solving, Pattern Recognition and Listening. It is designed for ages 4 and up although it also has potential as an educational tool for use in music classes in all primary levels.

The installation and setup present no difficulties. A Mac version is also available. You will need the disc in the CD ROM drive to play the game unless you get the download version. You can get it for about £14 or the download version for £10. At the company's Web site, you will find a link to sample lesson plans for teachers interested in integrating the program into their classroom.
