For many years now, EPOC has invited performers and friends of the company to contribute their ‘Desert Island Discs’ to the Friends Newsletter. Of course, EPOC has twice visited a desert island: once, when we went to Bermuda (thought to be the location of Shakespeare’s Tempest); and secondly, when we staged Haydn’s opera The Desert Island. It was this latter ‘visitation’ which inspired the idea of asking people for their Desert Island Discs. Here are the selections made by a few of our contributors - and a few new ones.

The idea for this feature comes from the long-running BBC Radio 4 programme, the world’s second longest-running radio programme. Contributors are invited to imagine themselves cast away on a desert island, and to choose eight pieces of music to take with them; discussion of their choices permits a review of their life. Often people choose the one piece they regard most highly. They are then asked which book they would take with them; they are automatically given the Complete Works of Shakespeare and either the Bible or another appropriate religious or philosophical work.
Guests also choose one luxury, which must be inanimate and of no use in escaping the island or allowing communication from outside.

The most requested music over the programme’s 60 year history is Ode to Joy, the last movement of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony.

Hope you enjoy them:
